Thrive Energy respectfully acknowledges that our work in the Okanagan takes place on the unceded traditional territory of the Syilx (Okanagan) people and, more broadly, the shared lands of many Indigenous Nations. We also recognize the Métis, Inuit and First Nations as distinct peoples with unique rights, histories and cultures, and we honour their leadership in clean energy and housing resilience.
Sîpihkisôwin (Low-Carbon Energy Program)
The Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) home energy program, called Sîpihkisôwin:, has been launched by Métis Nation British Columbia to help citizen-homeowners implement low-carbon upgrades.
For eligible homeowners, the program offers funding support for technologies such as, but not limited to, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, space heating and cooling, water heating systems, air-to-water heat pumps and building envelope upgrades (like insulation, windows and doors).
Here’s how the funding breaks down:
- Up to $20,000 in funding for eligible households with before-tax annual income under $150,000.
- Up to $15,000 for eligible households earning between $150,000 and $200,000 before tax.
The program officially launched on November 17, 2025, and MNBC homeowners can sign up to be prioritized for updates and participation.
Who Are the Métis and What Makes Them Distinct?
Many people use the term “Indigenous” as a broad category, but it’s important to recognize that First Nations, Inuit and Métis are distinct peoples. First Nations, Inuit and Métis are the 3 distinct Indigenous groups recognized in Canada’s constitution and within those groups, there are hundreds of individual Nations, organizations and cultural identities.
- The Métis are people of mixed Indigenous and European ancestry, though not defined by this, with their own distinct cultures, languages (including Michif), and governance structures.
- They have a unique identity separate from Inuit and First Nations.
- In BC, MNBC is the government representing Métis citizens in the province.
Understanding this distinction is important, because funding programs such as Sîpihkisôwin are designed specifically for Métis citizen-homeowners, recognizing their rights and circumstances.

What the Métis Home Energy Program Means for BC Homeowners and Advisors
Homeowners
If you’re a Métis homeowner in BC, this is a great opportunity to upgrade your home’s efficiency and reduce energy costs. The funding is significant and focused on the real-world upgrades that make a difference: better insulation, efficient heating/cooling, and solar options.
This program provides the funding and support to make decisions that improve both comfort and energy performance.
Communities
For Métis communities, this program supports housing stock improvements, resilience against increasing energy costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It aligns with clean energy goals and helps communities build long-term capacity.
Energy Advisors
If you’re a program qualified Energy Advisor in BC (PQEA), Sîpihkisôwin means work opportunities in collaboration with Métis homeowners. Advisors will help homeowners model and verify upgrades, select priority measures based on the house as a system, ensure eligible technologies and liaise with MNBC’s program delivery. It’s a good idea to become familiar with the program as well as the Métis Nation, and to help build relationships with MNBC and stay ready for inquiries from Métis homeowners.
