Understanding the CMHC MLI Select Program
The CMHC MLI Select program is an initiative designed to enhance energy efficiency in both new construction and existing buildings. By participating in this program, property owners can access a range of benefits that promote sustainability and reduce energy consumption.
This program is game-changing for those looking to meet modern energy standards, contribute to a greener future while accessing funding that helps make the purchase of a Multi-Unit Residential Building possible.
Where the Energy Advisor Fits In

New Builds
New Construction Multi-Unit Residential Buildings must demonstrate themselves to be 15-40% more energy efficiency than the same building built to minimum standards. We provide this documentation for you and help you explore the paths to attain this end-goal.
Existing Buildings
A Pre-Retrofit Energuide evaluation takes place to show the Multi-Unit Residential Building’s energy intensity at its current state and then projections are created to show paths to improve the building’s energy use by 15-40%. Reports showing these projections are provided to you, by us, for your submission to CMHC prior to approval for MLI Select.
Access to Incentives
Once your Existing or New Construction Reports are sent to the MLI Select Program, CMHC will verify that the project is going to meet the requirements for the desired step and then will offer the incentives as appropriate.
Energy Evaluation Requirements
Comprehensive Guidelines for Program Application Submission
To successfully submit under the points system for Energy Efficiency, an energy audit must encompass a detailed analysis of the building’s energy consumption patterns. This includes a thorough examination of heating, cooling, and lighting systems, as well as an evaluation of insulation and window efficiency. The audit should identify potential areas for energy savings and recommend upgrades that align with the CMHC MLI select program’s sustainability goals. All findings must be documented in a comprehensive report, which should include baseline energy data, proposed improvements, and projected energy savings. Additionally, the audit must be conducted by a Registered Energy Advisor, or other qualified professional to ensure accuracy and compliance with program standards.
